The World of Joy feels like wandering in the enchanting landscape of a child’s dreams.
Informed by psychology theories and research on cognitive development & the different stages of play, the space is designed to trigger the imagination, encourage symbolic play, and foster self-learning.
The concept of playing outdoors has inspired all the design details and features, while a story of a magical and joyful world unfolds from the moment you enter the space. Colourful backdrops and vibrant floors engulf the kid’s playroom area. Central to the interior and the story of the World Of Joy are the two house-shaped structures at the back of the room. Largely open plan and flexible, the space is visually divided on floor level, making a feature of the brightly coloured safety vinyl flooring.

The playful bush outline in front of the two houses, designed as a kid could have drawn it, separates the restrooms from the play area. A graphic tree, doubling as a reading corner with few shelves getting used as a small bookcase, refers to and signifies the story of the outdoors. Basic geometrical shapes on the wall work as visual clues for the children to unleash their imagination and use them in their role-play to create their fantastical worlds.
The lights above the children’s area are grouped in clusters of large plain spherical light bulbs designed to resemble clouds.

While the adults WC have been kept in their original style, the children’s one have been washed in a mellow yellow hue, even the grout of the white tiles, similar to the house enclosure.
Moving to the front part of the space, outdoors furniture has been selected for the waiting, café area to describe its use by adults.

To keep the interior visually unified and consistent, complimentary colour palettes have been used throughout while the vibrant floor continues all the way to the front. A bright yellow awning has been placed strategically at the front of the cafe area to evoke a feeling of the summer ice cream parlours.

Located between the café and the front windows of the space, a supervised activity area has been located, including a trampoline and a climbing wall. Apart from the health and safety aspect, the decision to place these activities by the shop-front intended to communicate the joyous, active and playful mood of the space and attract passers-by.

Opposite of the activity area and adjacent to the main entrance we find the reception where customers and members of the playroom are welcomed and shown through the space. In the same manner, simple colourful graphics have been applied on the back and storage area walls adding to the narrative of the outdoors.
The World of Joy is an interior project whose goals have been achieved by designing an impactful space with a strong narrative at its core, while the limitations of the budget have been taken as opportunities for creativity and smart design solutions.
